![]() “We’ve found that financial wellness is just a broad topic, regardless of distribution channel or how it’s actually done,” said Peng. Since December 2020, the company has grown its customer base by more than 600%. While the CEO declined to reveal hard revenue figures, he did tell TechCrunch that Northstar’s revenue has grown “over 5x” year-over-year and that the expectation is that it will grow 3x year-over-year next year. It appears that Northstar’s services are in more demand than ever in the current challenging macro environment, according to Peng, who was previously a general partner at Red Swan Ventures for nearly a decade and an early investor in Coinbase, Guideline, Even and Oscar. And as the company has built out its financial advisor team, the company has been intentional about hiring diverse staff so that employees are more likely to talk with people with similar backgrounds as their own. Northstar pairs employees with the same advisor so they can feel comfort and familiarity rather than have an employee talk to a different individual every time they have a question. Employees pay nothing and there is no commission involved. The company charges employers a monthly subscription based on headcount t o give employees one-on-one access to a full-time financial advisor employed by Northstar. For example, Northstar’s customers include the likes of Zoom, Snap, 23andMe, Virgin Orbit and, ironically, NerdWallet. While many of its clients are in the tech space, they “range in size and industry” and include private and public companies, according to Peng. Specifically, Los Angeles-based Northstar has developed a set of personal financial management tools to help guide employees through various financial and life situations with the aim of helping them understand “the full value of their compensation, equity, and benefits.” “We want to build financial wellness for the 100%, not just the 1%,” he said. Realizing that receiving financial advisory services is often a luxury reserved for the upper middle class or affluent, Peng decided the best way to make such services more accessible was to partner with employers to offer a financial wellness benefit to their employees. It was at that point that Peng realized that he was likely not alone in his struggles and so the idea for his startup, Northstar, was born. So he searched Google and “read a lot of NerdWallet articles” but still “made a ton of mistakes.” “I was also not sure how I should balance paying off my student loans while building an emergency fund and putting money into my 401(k).” ![]() “There were companies telling me that I should refinance my student loans,” recalls Peng, who is the second oldest of six children born in Taiwan. He asked his immigrant parents what they thought the best approach would be for him to pay it off. Will Peng graduated from Princeton with about $35,000 in debt. One of these experts was Tara Harrison, DVM, MPVN, a veterinary oncologist and Associate Professor at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After the call went out for consultations and information, the number of responses was simply astonishing. “Because sarcomas tend to be particularly aggressive in human children,” says DLC veterinarian Laura Ellsaesser, DVM, “we knew that what were we up against was probably not good.” So the Duke Lemur Center sent out a call for help, reaching out to experts worldwide for assistance in Winnie’s case. Never before had an aye-aye been diagnosed with cancer. The biopsy results came back with bad news: The mass was a cancerous tumor that occurs in bones and soft tissues, known as a sarcoma. Winnie was brought in for an exam, during which the DLC’s veterinarians discovered a large mass in her right arm. In mid-April, at around 10 months old, Winifred’s keepers noted that she was acting a bit “off,” showing less interest in solid food and spending far less time than she typically did moving around and exploring her room. She appeared to have inherited her mother’s curiosity, peeping out of the nest at just five weeks old and venturing fully out of the nestbox by two months of age-ready to explore the wider world.įady proved to be an excellent mother, and she and Winnie were often seen wrestling and playfully chasing each other around their enclosure.īy spring 2021, Winifred had entered the stage, typical of aye-aye infants six months of age and older, where she might alarm human visitors by charging them from across the room in mock attacks.Īt that point, however, things began to change. That infusion of fresh genetic material is essential for the success of any conservation breeding program, as the more genetically diverse a population is, the more resilient and healthy it tends to be.ĭuring her first stage of life, Winnie was a typically active and inquisitive aye-aye infant. Through him, Fady and Winnie introduced a brand-new genetic line into the DLC’s aye-aye population. Her grandsire, Nirina, had been imported from overseas and was unrelated to any other aye-ayes living in North America. Of those, 10 live at the Duke Lemur Center, where they help maintain a genetic safety net for aye-ayes in the wild.Īs Fady’s first offspring, Winnie’s birth was especially exciting. Aye-ayes are endangered in Madagascar, and there are fewer than 30 individuals within human care in the United States. Named “Winifred” after Bette Midler’s character Winifred Sanderson in Hocus Pocus, the infant was born to first-time mom Fady, a five-year-old female on loan from the San Diego Zoo.įady arrived at the Lemur Center in September 2019 to join our conservation breeding program, as organized through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan. ![]() On June 24, 2020, the DLC welcomed its eighth infant of the season: a rare baby aye-aye. ![]() Originally published in December 2021 in Issue 3 of the Duke Lemur Center’s annual magazine.

Starting now, I’ll no longer convert images to DNG, at least not all of them. And who knows, they might even develop a RAW model for their other applications like GigaPixel AI and Sharpen AI. While I still prefer using DNG for the reasons mentioned above, I want to be able to take advantage of the new RAW model in DeNoise AI. DeNoise AI did an amazing job on those images already, so I’m not complaining.īut going forward, I’m going to want to change my workflow when it comes to converting to DNG files. This means I cannot go back and use the new RAW model of DeNoise AI on my existing aurora and other night images. The downside, you may ask? The new RAW model does not yet work with all raw files (Fuji), nor does it work with DNG files. Image on left treated with DeNoise AI RAW model. DeNoise AI 3.3 used for image on the left. See the comparison images below, in both images, the deNoise treated image is on the left (click on images to enlarge): Mountain detail. (And I thought I was thrilled with DeNoise AI before this new version.) You can then save the image as DNG if you wish to take the greatest advantage of the Lightroom Develop module or Camera Raw in Photoshop. All using the raw sensor data from the camera. Not only does it do a great job on the noise, but it does an amazing job of clarifying and sharpening images at the same time. The new RAW model works from the original raw sensor data. As the name implies, it works on RAW files that can then be saved as tiff, psd, jpg, png, or dng. Topaz has added a new noise reduction model to DeNoise AI called RAW. ![]() That workflow just got a kick in the pants with the latest version of Topaz DeNoise AI (3.3). The reasons I do this are that DNGs don’t need xmp sidecar files and they have a smaller file size than the raw files from the camera, in my case, Nikon NEF files. The last thing I do before I send the images off to their archiving home is to convert them to DNG (deleting the original raw files). Mostly I just want to get the images imported, culled, and add metadata and ratings. But I usually don’t do a lot of image editing at this point. Some will go to Photoshop for anything that can’t be done in Lightroom. I usually will do some image editing at this point, mostly in Lightroom but some will go to DeNoise AI and saved as tiff files. I’ll delete all the images marked with an X and then make sure all remaining images have keywords, captions, and location information. Subsequent passes may increase star ratings and usually add a few more images to the delete pile. And I add bulk and then specific metadata. I add color labels to images that are to become part of a panorama, exposure or focus blending series of images, teaching images, etc. Up until now my workflow for new images brought into Lightroom has been to do a few passes of culling, which involves marking some images with either a star for early favorites, a reject tag (X) for definite deletes, and no markings for decent but not outstanding images. ![]() ![]()

Warehousing is often a variable cost, meaning it fluctuates based on how much product you’re storing. By adopting a diligent strategy, you can address this costly inventory mistake. Avoid dead stockĭead stock is stock that can no longer be sold-not because it's expired, but rather because it may have gone out of season, out of style, or otherwise become irrelevant. ![]() Managing inventory effectively helps you avoid unnecessary spoilage. If you’re selling a product that has an expiry date, like coffee or tea, there’s a very real chance it will go bad if you don’t sell it in time. Whether you’re a small business or company using enterprise resource planning (ERP), inventory management helps your business do a number of important things: 1. Benefits of inventory managementĮffective inventory management is essential for ensuring a business has enough stock on hand to meet customer demand. Poorly-handled inventory management can result in a business either losing money on potential sales that can’t be filled or wasting money by stocking too much inventory. Below are some of the benefits of inventory management, as well as the challenges. However, inventory management grows in complexity as your business scales.Įffective inventory management requires a delicate balance of not having too much inventory (leading to overstocking) or too little inventory (causing stockouts). Inventory management is a critical part of any successful business, ensuring your store has enough of the right inventory at the right time. Because of this subtle distinction, all stock is included within inventory, but not all inventory is referred to as stock. Stock refers to the finished goods that you have available to sell to your customers, while inventory might include materials used to create the finished goods, as well as the finished goods themselves. Inventory control refers to the process of regulating, monitoring, and handling the inventory that you already have at your store, while inventory management also accounts for demand forecasting, ordering, and receiving inventory. Inventory control is contained within inventory management, but it is slightly different. Inventory management vs inventory control ![]() This helps you maintain optimal inventory levels and minimize costs. The goal of inventory management is to minimize the cost of holding inventory by helping you know when it’s time to replenish products or buy more materials to manufacture them. It also tracks your company’s stocked goods and monitors their weight, dimensions, amounts, and location. It ensures businesses have the right amount of product in the right place at the right time. Inventory management is the system a business uses to order, store, organize and move inventory through their supply chain. ![]()
